Greetings from Sweden
Stockholm, October 30th, 2009
Dear Colleagues,
It’s a great pleasure for me to have the opportunity to send you best wishes on behalf of your colleagues from the Swedish Association of Professional Translators (SFÖ) in connection to the foundation of your association in Kenya. Mrs. Britt-Marie Seex has told me so much about the dedication and fantastic work that you all are performing in your country and I’m deeply impressed.
The SFÖ has quite a long experience as an association, next year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary, and it’s the biggest association of its kind in Sweden. There are over 1000 individual members and around 30 company members consisting of major translation companies in Sweden. We also have quite a number of members living outside Sweden, both in Europe and overseas.
I take the opportunity to offer you all support and assistance by SFÖ that you might need in the time of start-up of your organization. A week ago we launched our new website, www.sfoe.se, and I hope you’ll visit it. Pages in English will also be available in the near future. A key feature is the database search function, which makes it very easy to identify the right person for the right job. This is something that we warmly recommend you for your own organization.
At last but not least I would like to wish you luck in your future activities, and send my best personal regards.

Meet the Steering Committee members
Here is a brief introduction of the SC members appointed on 15 October during the St. Jerome celebrations at Tamarind Translations, Nairobi.
Fatma Zohra
Holder of a Master Degree in teaching French as Foreign Language and a Diploma in Translation among others, I enjoy teaching French but for several years I have been in the field of translation which I enjoy too. I mainly translate from English to French. I have a vast experience in translating both general and specialized documents in economy, sociology, politics, techniques, technology.. etc… for different local and international clients based in Kenya and abroad.
I hope by joining our efforts, sharing our ideas and experiences, we will contribute to the formation of an effective Association for Translators/Interpreters in Kenya. An association that upholds the welfare and interests of the entire Community.

DEO Gumba
I am the founder and director of the Regional Interpretation and Translation School, RITS, the first institution of its kind in eastern, central and Horn of Africa.
I have worked in the field of translation and interpretation for over 10 years, both as an employee of BBC Monitoring and as an independent translator and interpreter French-English-Swahili. As an independent translator, I have worked at over 100 conferences for about 25 organisations: local, regional and international NGOs as well as inter-governmental organisations in the region, like IGAD and COMESA, the African Union, at the continental level, and the UN agencies, at the international level.
The vision and passion behind RITS is to contribute in a modest way to ensuring that future generations of interpreters and translators have a platform to sustainably incubate and nurture their talent into recognisable international qualifications and standards. I would like to take this passion to the next level by helping provide an interface where budding translators and interpreters meet the experienced ones and to ensure this interface, in the form of an association, serves as a professional support and development forum for all translators and interpreters in Kenya. I would like to help craft an association through which interpreters and translators can speak with one voice and collectively face the challenges that affect them and their profession.

I am an English<>Swahili Translator and Voice over artist. I have worked as a Swahili radio presenter with reputable media houses, notably the BBC in Nairobi. I have over seven years experience in English<>Swahili translation for various local and international clients, specializing in IT, Journalism, Marketing and Medical translation. I am currently the Swahili Language Specialist for Google - Kenya.

I am a freelance English-Kiswahili translator with over ten years experience in both general literary texts and specialized subject areas. My bias is mainly in areas of Behaviour Change Communication (BCC), Research tools, Adverts, Environmental Issues, Corporate or Seminar reports and Religious educational/literary texts.
I have undertaken a number of translation tasks including UNEP journal reports on environmental stories, corporate reports and church translations.
I am grateful and humbled by the great honour accorded to us as members of this inaugural steering committeee. It is my hope and belief that we shall strive to lay a good foundation concerning the task in our hands. This is our opportunity to make this profession get the recognition it deserves!

I am currently a project Manager at Tamarind Translations, Nairobi. Part of my work involves coordination of Tamarind Linguists Forum (TLF), a group created by our agency in early 2009.
I hold a degree in Linguistics and postgraduate training in Project Management. I have been in the translation business since 2000 as a translator, team leader and now project manager. I mainly translate from French to English.
The idea of supporting the creation of an association in Kenya was one of Tamarind Translations' core objectives in the formation of TLF. Our agency pledges full support for the Steering Committes' work.
